November 2021 :: Cataloging children's materials
Descrizione
Bryan Baldus, Alex Kyrios, and guest speaker, Michele Zwierski, one of the editor's of the new 6th edition of Cataloging Correctly for Kids, presented an overview on cataloging children's materials that covered classification, the use of subject headings, and general cataloging principles for children's materials.
The recent changes to the 'juvenile films' subject headings were also highlighted during the presentation. The Library of Congress has not yet updated the related instructions in other portions of the SHM, so there is a conflict between what is said in H1095 vs. H2230 (Visual Materials and Non-Music Sound Recordings):
For the headings with "Juvenile films", "Juvenile sound recordings", and "Juvenile software", until August 2021, the resource to which those have been assigned may have been either fictional or non-fiction. In August 2021, the Library of Congress updated Subject Headings Manual (SHM) H1095 "Free-Floating Subdivision" to reflect the revised definitions found in the form subdivision records for "Juvenile films", which is now used for "nonfiction films produced especially for children", and for "Juvenile drama", which is now used "as a form subdivision under names of countries, cities, etc., names of individual persons and corporate bodies, and under classes of persons, ethnic groups, names of deities and mythological or legendary figures, individual and groups of fictitious and legendary characters, and topical headings for fiction films produced especially for children."
