Create a multiple universe report

Learn how to create a custom report using multiple universes.

Overview

You can create a custom report using data from multiple universes in WorldShare Report Designer. Before creating a multiple universe report, you should know a few things.

  • In order to generate reports using data from multiple universes, there must be a common data point in each universe. (e.g., Item Barcode and LHR Item Barcode )
  • Queries are used in Web Intelligence to access data. Rather than having to know the specifics of formal Structured Query Language (SQL), you only need to know which universe the data that you want is stored in, the data object requested, and its basic relationships to get started.
  • Reports are built in the Query Panel using report objects.

For an overview of the Query Panel, see About Report Designer.

Note: Report Designer times out after 20 minutes of inactivity.

Create a multiple universe report

1. Open WorldShare Report Designer and select a universe

  1. In the left navigation, click Report Launch Pad.
  2. Click the Home button (Screenshot of the Report Designer Home button) in the left of the WorldShare logo.
  3. Click Applications Web Intelligence to open WorldShare Report Designer.
  4. Double-click Universe in the Select a Data Source dialog.
  5. Double-click the universe you want to use to create your first query in the Select a Data Source dialog. The Query Panel dialog opens.

2. Create a query for the first universe

  1. In the Query Panel, select the report objects and query operators you want to include in your query.
  2. (Optional) Click the Show/hide data preview panel button (Screenshot of the WorldShare Reports Show/hide data preview panel button) to add the Data Preview pane to the Query Panel and then click Refresh to preview of the data as it will appear in your custom report.
  3. (Optional) By default, the query will be named Query 1. You can rename it to better identify it. (e.g., Acquisitions query).
    1. Right-click the query name tab and select Rename from the pop-up menu.
    2. From the Rename query dialog, enter a new name in the New value form field.
    3. Click OK.
  4. (Recommended) Click Run.

3. Create a query for the second universe

  1. Click the Edit button (Screenshot of the Query panel Edit button) in the Query tab. The Query Panel dialog opens.
  2. Click Add Query to open the Select a Data Source dialog from the Query Panel. By default, the query will be named Query 2. You can rename it to better identify it.
  3. From the Select a Data Source dialog, double-click Universe and then double-click the universe you want to use to create your second query in the Select a Data Source dialog.
  4. Select the report objects and query filters you want to include in your query. One of the query filters you add to the second universe should be a report object you included in the query for the first universe. This report object must exist in both universes and is known as the match point. To add a match point:
    1. Select the report object you've decided to use as your match point (e.g., Item Barcode) and add it to the Query Filters pane.
    2. Click the Define filter type button (Screenshot of the WorldShare Reports Define filter type button) and then select Result from another query from the pop-up menu. The Available Objects dialog opens.
    3. Select your match point report object from the Available Objects dialog (e.g., Item Barcode).
    4. Click OK.
  5. (Optional) Click the Show/hide data preview panel button (Screenshot of the WorldShare Reports Show/hide data preview panel button) to add the Data Preview pane to the Query Panel and then click Refresh to preview of the data as it will appear in your custom report.
  6. Click Run to run both queries.
  7. If either query has a prompt, the Prompts dialog opens. Set prompt values as needed and click Run. The Add Query dialog opens.
  8. Select the Include the result objects in the document without generating a table radio button from the Add Query dialog and click OK. The initial report results will appear, but need to be merged.

4. Merge data

You must merge at least one dimension object to use objects from both queries in the same report.

  1. From the Report screen, click Show Main side panel (Screenshot of the WorldShare Reports Show Main side panel button) > Objects tab (Screenshot of the WorldShare Reports Objects tab button). The Main side panel opens.
  2. In the Main side panel, click the Modes and settings button (Screenshot of the WorldShare Reports Modes and settings button) and select Queries and Cubes from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click the common data point you want to merge on from your first query.
  4. Press <Ctrl> and click the common data point from your second query.
  5. Click the More options button (Screenshot of the WorldShare Reports More options button) for the second common data point and select Merge from the pop-up menu. A new area, Merged Dimensions, appears in the Queries and Cubes pane and the report updates automatically.

5. Create a report with data from all queries

Web Intelligence has a rule that only objects from a single universe can be displayed in one table together. If you attempt to add a report object that is not in both universes to your multiple universe report, the report object will not appear and all other report objects from that universe query will be grayed out in the Available Objects tab.

  1. Click or right-click the Report 1 tab and select New.
  2. Expand each accordion from the Objects tab in the Main side panel.
  3. Press <Ctrl> and select all of the available report objects. You'll need to select:
    • The merged dimension object(s)
    • Any dimension objects from the first query
    • Any measure objects from the second query
    • The detail objects you created for the second query
  4. Drag the selected objects onto the blank new report.
