About the Insights Builder
Overview
The Insights Builder allows you to compare your monographs and serials collections with other institutions around the world. Using the Insights Builder, you can create comparisons with:
- My Libraries (A)- Includes one or more holding symbols from your institution
- Lists (A) - Includes one or more titles lists your institution has uploaded
- Comparator Groups - Consists of holding symbols from comparator libraries
- Lists (B) - Consists of title lists you select for comparison
- WorldCat - Specific countries, states, or regions within WorldCat
This page discusses the different components of the Insights Builder page in detail.
1. Group A comparison
The Compare the A Group with drop-down list allows you to select a comparison type. Choose from the following:
- Libraries or Lists (default) - Compare your library's collection to specific institutions and title lists in the Comparator Groups (B).
- WorldCat - Compare your library's collection and uploaded title lists to specific countries, states, and regions in WorldCat. You can select specific regions with the Holdings Locations filter.
Note: When you select WorldCat from the drop down, the options to compare against libraries or title lists in the B Group will be removed.
2. Analysis Type
Compare Group A to the collections of other libraries, title lists, or regions in Group B by using one of four different analysis queries.
Tutti | Show titles held by either Group A OR Group B. See Run an All query. |
Overlap | Show Titles held by Group A AND Group B. See Run an overlap query. |
Distinct | Show Titles held only by your library or group (Group A). See Run a distinct query. |
Gap | Show titles held only by your comparator groups or WorldCat regions (Group B). See Run a gap query. |
3. Edition Type
The Select Edition Type drop-down list allows you to choose between using the OCLC number or OCLC WorkID as the match point for your query.
OCLC number (OCN):
OCN can be used as the match point for all analysis types.
WorkID:
Due to the nature of the WorkID functionality, it can only be used with Overlap, Distinct, and Gap analyses.
When running a query using WorkID as the match point, the Results are the number of OCLC numbers that met the WorkID criteria. When comparing OCN-based queries to WorkID-based queries, you can expect to see the following differences based on analysis type:
- Overlap - The results when using WorkID will be larger than the results when using OCN matching. This is due to the expanding number of titles shared between the two comparator groups, since libraries could have holdings on different editions of materials that belong to the same work family.
- Distinct - The results when using WorkID will be smaller than the results when using OCN matching. This is due to the nature of WorkID matching shrinking the pool of unique titles at an institution.
- Gap - The results when using WorkID will be smaller than the results when using OCN matching. This is due to the nature of the WorkID matching shrinking the pool of unique titles at an institution.
4. Groups and lists
Groups
My Libraries (A)
Your My Libraries group will be automatically configured when your Choreo Insights account is initially set up. This group is configured based on your institution's WorldCat holdings symbol(s).
Comparator Groups (B)
Comparator groups are created by selecting other libraries' collections from a list on the Comparator Group page.
Lists
Comparator lists
Comparator lists are pre-supplied title lists available for you to choose during query creation. They allow you to compare against authoritative title lists, publisher lists, locally-supplied title lists, and recommended title lists.
User title lists
You can upload custom-created title lists and compare them against your institution's collection. These title lists can be uploaded by anyone from your library as long as they have a Choreo Insights account. For more information, see Create a title list and Upload a title list.
WorldCat regions
WorldCat regions are available for comparison in the B Group when you select WorldCat from the Compare the A Group drop down. You can select specific regions with the Holdings Locations filter.
5. Query Filters
Filter name | Details |
---|---|
Subject Classifications |
By default, the report will query All Subjects. Use the slider to switch between LC and Dewey subject classifications:
If you have chosen to filter by specific classes or ranges, use the accordion buttons to expand them for more granular filtering options. The query filters clear every time you switch between classifications. |
FAST Heading |
Use FAST subject headings to look at specific topics. To use FAST subject headings:
Adjust the rows per page to show longer lists of matching terms if necessary. FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology) is derived from the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and is one of the library domains' most widely used subject terminology schemas. The development of FAST has been a collaboration of OCLC Research and the Library of Congress. Work on FAST began in late 1998. Visit FAST Subject Headings for more information. |
Gruppo Holdings |
Allows you to search by holding levels in the group of libraries you have included in your search (My Library + Comparators).
|
Patrimonio di WorldCat |

Date Added to WorldCat | Allows you to filter by the date that an item was added to WorldCat. This filter only affects the B Group libraries, lists, and regions. |
WorldCat Shared Print Retentions |
