Run a gap query
Overview
Gap queries allow you to compare your institution's collection against other institutions, user-made lists, comparator lists, and WorldCat region data to identify items your library does not own. You can use a gap query to:
- Find titles that a comparator library owns that your library does not
- Find titles that a comparator library has recently added to its collection
- Identify titles that your library is missing from a comparator list
- Find how many titles your library owns from a provided reading list
For more information on building an effective and informative query, see About the Insights Builder.
Filtering gap queries
Tips for filtering
- To limit the list of results to recent titles owned by a comparator library that your library does not hold any edition of:
- For Select Edition Type, slide the toggle to enable WorkID.
- Expand the Publications filter and enter a recent Publication Year (e.g., 2023).
- Use the Formats filter to limit by specific material types, e.g., print books, journals, or ebooks.
- To limit by titles known to be popular, specify a minimum WorldCat Holdings count, ex. More Than 50.
- When comparing against multiple institutions:
- Use the Group Holding - Any Edition filter to identify works that multiple comparator institutions hold at least one edition of.
Run a gap query against your collection using a comparator group
A gap query against one or more institutions will identify titles held by those institutions but not your own. You may use this type of query to identify titles that comparable institutions or programs have, so that you can evaluate adding them to your own collection.
Example: You would like to assess possible acquisitions to support your nursing program. You can compare your collection to the collection of a university with a top-ranked nursing program, identifying titles that your library does not have.
- Navigate to Insights > Insights Builder.
- For Compare the A Group with, select Libraries or Lists.
- Under the drop-down list for Select Analysis Type, select Gap.
- (Optional) Use the Select Edition Type drop-down list to choose between OCLC Number or WorkID as the match point.
- Input your institution(s) into My Libraries (A) by typing or choosing from the drop-down menu.
Or
Choose User Title List(s) from the Lists (A) drop-down menu. - Create a comparator group with the institution(s) you would like to compare against, or select one from the B - Comparator Groups drop-down list. See Create a Comparator Group.
- Select the Query Filters to narrow down your list of results. Example: Expand the Academic Program (CIP) filter and enter the 4-digit CIP code for Nursing Programs.
- Click RUN REPORT.
- (Optional) Adjust filters to continue narrowing down your search, and re-run the report.
