"unrecognised library symbol" error in WSILL

Symptom

  • In the circulation history of a borrowing request, you get the following error message: "Temporary item record failed to create (exception) unrecognised library symbol: //AgencyId[SYMBOL]. UNKNOWN_INSTITUTION". The SYMBOL is replaced with your own library's symbol.

Resolution

Short introduction or instructions to follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Holding Codes Translation Table (OCLC Service Configuration > WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat Local > Holding Codes & Shelving Location Messages > Holding Codes Translation Table) and write down the following for the branch that should be the pickup location:
    1. Display Name
    2. Branch Registry ID
  2. Go to OCLC Service Configuration > WMS Circulation > Admin/General > Branch Locations. 
    1. Add the branch. For the name, use the Display Name from the Holding Codes Translation Table.  Set the Request Fulfillment status to Active Pickup Location. 
  3. Go to OCLC Service Configuration > WorldShare ILL > Circulation Integration > ILS locations.
    1. Add the branch. For the Location Name, use the Display Name from the Holding Codes Translation Table.  For the Location Code, use the Branch Registry ID.
  4. Go to the borrowing request. If the pickup location hasn't been added to it, add it from the dropdown menu.
    1. Save the request.
    2. Go to the Circulation History and retry the Circulation Integration.
