Unable to generate thumbnail message when adding multiple files in CONTENTdm

Symptom
  • You receive the error message "Unable to generate thumbnail for <file name>. A default thumbnail as defined by the thumbnail manager will be used." when importing multiple files in Project client.

Resolution

This error will appear if the Project Client can't find the file name referenced in the tab-delimited file you uploaded. If the file names in your tab-delimited file match the files in your folder, check to make sure the directory structure is correct. If the directory structure is correct, confirm that there are no blanks in the file name field in your tab-delimited file.

Another reason for the error is if you are using a raw image file format like CR2. If that is the case, please convert the file to a more common format like JPG or TIFF. Please see What file types does CONTENTdm support? for more information.

If problems persist, contact OCLC Support with your server/collection name as well as the tab-delimited file you are using to import data.
