I'm receiving the message, "the file format and extension of 'file name here' don't match. The file could be corrupted or unsafe. Unless you trust its source, don't open it. Do you want to open it anyway?" when opening a report emailed to me by OCLC Usage Statistics

Symptom

  • I'm receiving the message, "the file format and extension of 'file name here' don't match. The file could be corrupted or unsafe. Unless you trust its source, don't open it. Do you want to open it anyway?" when opening a report emailed to me by OCLC Usage Statistics in Microsoft Excel.
  • I'm receiving the message "Excel cannot open the file 'file name here' because the file format or file extension is not valid."

Applies to

  • Usage Statistics
  • WorldShare Collection Evaluation

Resolution

If you are receiving an expected report from Usage Statistics, it's okay to click "yes" and view the report in Excel. This error message is expected and is popping up because OCLC exports reports in an older format of Excel in order to ensure wide-reaching compatibility for our members.
