ILLiad email notifications are failing, SSL or TSL connection errors

Symptom

  • You see an error in the History tab section for notifications that says, "An error occurred while attempting to establish an SSL or TLS connection."
  • In the System Manager log mentions something like, "The host name (example-alias.edu) did not match the name given in the server's SSL certificate (smtp.example.edu)."

Applies to

  • ILLiad Client 9.2.9

Resolution

This can happen when the hostname in the EMailServerAddress key in the Customization Manager is a DNS alias (CNAME), but the certificate only points to the real hostname and not the alias. There are two solutions, and the first one is the preferred, cleaner option, but the second option works immediately for the currently issued certificate.

  • Ask the IT staff at your institution to update or reissue the certificate. It should include the alias (currently listed in your EMailServerAddress) as a Subject Alternative Name (SAN).

or

  • In the ILLiad Customization Manager, search for EMailServerAddress and change it to the hostname given in the certificate. The System Manager logs will reveal what is in the certificate, as in the example in the Symptoms section above.

After completing one of those steps, restart the ILLiad System Manager service on the ILLiad server. Contact OCLC Support if you are still unable to send notifications.
