When a WorldCat record is merged into another, how does Collection Manager deliver the records involved?

Applies to

  • WorldShare Collection Manager

Answer

If a title was delivered previously (from a knowledge base or query collection) under OCN 1, and OCN 1 merged to OCN 2, then a Collection Manager will deliver the record for OCN 2 in a "merges" file with a Reason for Record Update of "OCLC control number change" (if configured), plus any other unrelated changes, if detected.

The same happens if both OCN 1 and OCN 2 had been previously delivered. Collection Manager delivers OCN 2 in a "merges" file.

If instead, only OCN 2 had been delivered previously, the merge of OCN 1 into OCN 2 would not trigger a record in a "merges" file.  If WorldCat Updates is enabled, it will detect changes to the 019 field and trigger a normal "update" record.

Additional information

The record in the "merges" file always has the current OCN in the 001 and 035$a fields, with the merged OCNs in 019$a and 035$z subfields. When a merge happens, holdings, LBDs, and LHRs are moved to the new OCN.
