OCR progress bar does not increase and prevents additional actions in the Project Client

Symptom

  • The progress bar when running OCR on an item or ingesting with OCR simultaneously does not increase, resulting in the need to force the Project Client to close via Task Manager

Applies to

  • CONTENTdm Project Client

Resolution

The primary cause of this issue is typically due to items with incompatable encoding in the image files being ingested into the Client. This can be tested by exporting a new copy of the item in an image editor and removing any existing metadata. Investigating the scanner settings used in the digitization of these items us usually necessary to resolve the issue.

Additionally, the CONTENTdm Project Client does not handle parallel processing well on Windows 11 machines. It is recommended to turn off parallel processing in the Task Manager by going to the Details menu and right-clicking on the entry for CONTENTdm Project Client while it is running. Choose 'Set affinity' in the context menu and select only one CPU. This is not a persistent setting, and will need to be done every time the Project Client is launched.

If you continue to experience issues with OCR processing, reach out to OCLC Support for additional assistance.
