Should Group-Aware Libraries Enable Next Gen Notifications Without Coordination?

Symptom

Libraries that are part of a consortium or group may enable Next Gen Notifications (NGN) without consulting their group administrator, leading to inconsistent patron experiences and potential conflicts with group-level settings.

Applies to

  • WorldShare Circulation

Resolution

Before enabling NGN:

  • Contact your group administrator or governing body to confirm whether NGN is approved for use across your group.
  • Ensure that group-level policies for notifications (e.g., shared templates, delivery preferences) are aligned with NGN functionality.
  • Turning on NGN without coordination can result in:
    • Duplicate or conflicting notifications
    • Patron confusion due to mixed messaging
    • Difficulty reverting changes

Recommendation
Always follow your consortium’s communication protocol before enabling the next generation notification feature.
