What is the difference between the WorldCat Knowledge Base and the Central Index?

Applies to

  • WorldCat Discovery
  • WorldShare Collection Manager

Answer

The WorldCat knowledge base is accessible to users through WorldShare Collection Manager. For journals, the knowledge base contains only journal-level metadata, meaning there is no article-level metadata in the knowledge base. Therefore, you cannot search for articles in Collection Manager; instead, you must search for the journal.

The central index supplies OCLC member libraries with article-level metadata. The central index is accessible to users via WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat.org. Knowledge base links can surface on article central index records in WorldCat Discovery if there is an ISSN match between the journal entry in the knowledge base and the central index record for the article.
